Video Upload Requirements

We're the web's first Flash powered airline content video site! Which means this website shows all its video content to viewers using Adobe's Flash Video (FLV) format. YouTube and Google Video use Flash video for good reason, and if its good enough for them, its good enough for us! Why Flash technology instead of Quicktime, Real, or Windows Media formats? Well it boils down to two words: Efficiency and simplicity.

The Flash video format is highly efficient in terms of having a much smaller file size profile than all other video formats, which means much shorter upload times for video uploaders, and much shorter buffering times for online viewers.

The Flash video format is extremely easy to work with. Video uploaders don't need to worry about complicated settings, codecs, or sound settings. Simply convert your avi video file to a Flash file, select a video frame for the upload, and then upload to our website. Online viewers need to download the Flash video player version 8 or higher to view the content. It is as simple as that.

Several video encoder software packages can convert video files to Flash format:
RivaVX FLV Encoder (Free, not available for MAC)
Flix Standard 8 for windows is our top recommendation Flash converter. This $39 converter generates ON2 format FLV files, which are the highest quality Flash files that any of the available flash converters can produce. The choice is yours, but we recommend this converter.
VisualHub Video Converter (just for MAC, free trial or $25)

Three easy steps to prepare your videos for upload

Step 1) Your clip should meet the following guidelines:
a) It complies with all of our Terms of Use
b) Aircraft image must be close to full frame (no dots in the sky please)
c) Video footage must be steady, and ideally filmed on a trypod. If the footage is hand held, it should be quite steady. Overly bumpy footage cannot be accepted.
d) There should not be more than just a few seconds of blank intro or ending leader footage.
e) Of course the footage must be aviation themed and match with the selected video categories. Non-aviation topic video footage will be removed from the site.
f) Video clip duration should ideally be less than 5 minutes. If the clip is really interesting and well done, then in rare circumstances videos up to 10 minutes are welcome.
g) Videos that are advertisements for products are not acceptable, except for one circumstance: We will only allow advertisements and promotional video clips created by airlines that are obviously intended to be widely and freely distributed for public viewing.

Step 2) Convert your video file to FLV flash format
Using any one of the flash encoder programs listed above, convert your 4:3 avi video file to a Flash FLV file.
If you are using the Flix Standard 8 for windows converter, we suggest you select the following settings:
a) By clicking the Vid/Aud tab in the Flix Standard 8 for windows converter, the video output size should be set to a width of 480 and a height of 360, and select "Use source framerate."
b) On the File tab the Preset field will show the word "Customized" due to the fact that you have set the width and height values in the step above. Make sure both the "Export Video" and "Export Audio" check boxes are selected, and the Export Video radio button must be set to "Flash 8 FLV."

16X9 widescreen footage
Our player will resize your movie and squish it down to a 4:3 aspect ratio. Therefore, before you upload your 16X9 widescreen clip, you need to import it into a 4:3 project in your editing program, and then make a letterboxed 4:3 version of your movie. Then use the letterboxed version of your video clip to make the FLV for upload to this website. Trust us, this will make the final product look much better.

Step 3) Grab a video frame from your clip
Using your favorite video edit software, grab a video frame from your clip, which should be in .jpg format and about 200 pixels in width. Our system will use this image to prepare thumbnails for your video clip.

Congratulations! You're now ready to upload your airline video clip (and chosen video frame) to the AirlineTV.net website!

Happy airline filming!
