The Hawk One Canadair Sabre jet was restored between 2007 and 2008, and help commemorates the 100th anniversary of flight in Canada. It was flown and displayed at airshows across Canada, and AirlineTV.net presents this selection of exclusive footage filmed during the airshow's media day on Thursday, August 6, 2009. Canadian astronaut and armed forces pilot Col. Chris Hadield presents the aircraft to the media on the flightline at the start of this video clip.

Harmony Airways, a five-year-old Canadian full-service airline, said on Tuesday it will end scheduled flights next month, blaming rising costs and competition from larger rivals. The privately held carrier said it will lay off 350 workers. It will not seek protection from creditors and might try to reorganize itself into a charter service, however. Vancouver-based Harmony, founded by entrepreneur David T.K. Ho, has operated a small fleet of Boeing 757-200 jets, flying mostly between large Canadian cities and U.S. vacation spots.

One of the keys to gathering data for Operation IceBridge is a highly modified McDonnell Douglas DC-8 jetliner, which NASA operates as a flying science laboratory. This workhorse DC-8 can fly long trips, allowing a suite of scientific instruments to study the Arctic ice sheet, glaciers and sea ice. The buzzwords in clean power for jet planes today are Geared Turbofan (GTF) and Advanced Turbofan (ATF). But in 1989 when this award winning story was produced, everyone was talking about Ultra High Bypass (UHB) jet engines. General Electric (GE) was testing the Unducted Fan (UDF) and a team of Pratt & Whitney and Allison were experimenting with a geared PropFan design. Test platforms consisted of a Boeing B-727 and a then Douglas MD-80 with most flights taking place at California's Mojave Airport. This video also includes an appearance by the late brilliant Aviation Week Editor Michael Dornheim. He will be missed. Clearly, this video is from our archive, not a recent production. Classic scenes from that classic film, here we have an ex-Delta CV-880 taxiing for the cameras for a movie. Listen to those GE CJ-805s! Judging by all the interior shots, this appears to have been filmed on board the genuine aircraft. Delta, along with TWA, retired their Convair Jets in 1974.

Gabon Express was an airline based in Libreville, Gabon. It operated scheduled passenger services and passenger and cargo charters. It ceased operations in June 2004. The Sud Aviation SE 210 Caravelle was the first short/medium-range jet airliner produced by the French Sud Aviation firm starting in 1955 (when it was still known as SNCASE). The Caravelle would go on to be one of the more successful European first generation jetliners, selling throughout Europe and even penetrating the United States market, with an order for 20 from United Airlines. The Caravelle established the aft-mounted-engine, clean-wing design that has since been used on a wide variety of subsequent aircraft. Filmed by Just Planes DVDs.
